Drawing from more than 40 years of experience in employment law and complex litigation on both sides of the practice, Joel Kelly understands that determining a “win” in an employment case can be challenging.
Joel has a deep appreciation for the law and the lived experiences that can give rise to disputes. He brings real-world pragmatism to negotiations and respect from the plaintiffs’ and defense bar to get to the heart of the problem and maximize the opportunity for the best possible outcome.
About Joel
Over the course of his career in employment law, Joel has established his versatility in countless cases, as a specialist in complex employment litigation, trial lawyer, and legal advisor on a variety of workplace issues. Joel was a principal at a national Am Law 100 employment firm for 30 years, where he represented clients from Alaska to Texas and emphasized a preventative approach to avoiding workplace disputes. Joel continues to work in private practice at Attwood Gregg in the employment law field and general litigation, representing employers and employees.
Joel is responsible for significant legal precedent under California wage hour law, and he is widely recognized as an authority in the area. His expertise also includes disputes concerning employee discipline and termination, discrimination and harassment, class, representative and collective actions, PAGA, whistle-blowing, and unfair competition and protection of trade secrets.
While Joel has always enjoyed the courtroom experience and found success as a trial lawyer, he recognizes that litigation is expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating for all sides, clients and adversaries, for whom a “win” is often hard to define. In 2017, Joel obtained a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from the prestigious Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University. He is a member of the California bar and a regular instructor on employment law topics. Joel has received numerous accolades from colleagues who have worked with him on both sides of the practice, and has consistently earned the recognition of his peers as a Super Lawyer® and Best Lawyer®.
Joel is an avid cyclist. He’s ridden from San Francisco to Los Angeles and climbed the hills in Italy. He also enjoys cooking and knows his way around the kitchen.
